How to Re-engage Inactive Newsletter Subscribers

A newsletter list is one of a publisher's most valuable assets. It brings readers back without relying on search or social platforms, and newsletter readers are more likely to register and subscribe.

But lists decay quietly. Subscribers stop opening, then stop clicking, and eventually unsubscribe or mark the newsletter as spam. Every inactive address also hurts deliverability for the readers who still want your emails.

The usual answer is another email: "We miss you". The problem is that an inactive subscriber doesn't open that one either. This guide shows a better approach: find inactive subscribers by their email engagement, and reach them where they still are, on your website.

Why Subscribers Go Quiet

Subscribers rarely stop reading your content altogether. More often:

  • the newsletter lands in a promotions tab or a folder they don't check
  • the topics no longer match what they read
  • they get too many emails from you
  • they read your site directly and no longer need the newsletter

Many inactive subscribers still visit your website. That makes the website the most reliable channel to reach them.

Step 1: Track Opens and Clicks

Add Email Tracking to your newsletter template. UniSignIn creates tracking URLs for each user and syncs them to your email platform, such as Mailchimp or Iterable. You add them to the template once, and every newsletter records opens and clicks against the reader's profile.

Each registered user's profile then shows:

  • Email opens and Email clicks in the last 30 days
  • Last email open and Last email click

Because opens and clicks are recorded in the same profile as reading behaviour, you can combine them in one segment: subscribers who stopped opening and still read your site.

Step 2: Find Inactive Subscribers

Create a segment of subscribers who haven't opened a newsletter recently, for example:

  • Email opens (last 30 days) equals 0
  • the subscriber is subscribed to the newsletter

Split it further by behaviour:

  • Inactive in email, active on site: add Active days (last 30 days) greater than or equal to 2. They still read you, just not the newsletter.
  • Inactive everywhere: add Last seen not within the last 30 days. They are the hardest to win back.
  • Clickers who stopped: Last email click within the last 90 days but not the last 30. They used to engage.

Step 3: Reach Them on Your Site

For subscribers who still visit your site, show an experience with the Experience Orchestration Engine:

  • Ask whether the newsletter still fits, and offer topic choices or a lower frequency.
  • Suggest a different newsletter that matches the categories they read.
  • Ask them to confirm their email address, which also helps if emails are landing in spam.

A short, relevant question on a page they chose to visit works far better than another unread email.

Step 4: Clean the List

For subscribers inactive everywhere, send a final re-permission email and remove those who don't respond. A smaller, engaged list gets better deliverability, better open rates and a more accurate picture of your audience.

Step 5: Measure

Follow the segment over the next weeks. Subscribers who change preferences or start opening again move out of the inactive segment. The Audience Overview shows the number of email subscribers overall, and the Conversions section shows new email subscriptions with the experience readers clicked before subscribing.

Common Mistakes

Only using email to fix email. Subscribers who don't open won't open the re-engagement email either.

Treating opens as exact. Some email apps load images automatically and others block them. Use opens as a trend and clicks as the stronger signal.

Keeping every address. Inactive addresses cost money and hurt deliverability. Removing them is part of a healthy list.

Ignoring what they read. Reading behaviour tells you which newsletter a subscriber would actually open.

Getting Started

  1. Add Email Tracking to your newsletter template.
  2. Create a segment of subscribers with no email opens in the last 30 days.
  3. Reach those who still visit with a personalised experience.
  4. Clean the rest and measure the result.
