Email Campaigns

Overview

A campaign sends one of your email templates to the subscribers of a project, or to a segment. Send it now, at a set time, or on a schedule such as every Monday morning.

UniSignIn only sends campaigns to people who said yes to marketing emails, and skips addresses that bounced, complained or unsubscribed.

Before you start

  1. Choose the Marketing consent field for the project in Email Settings. Without it, campaigns for the project can't be launched.
  2. Create a Marketing or Journey template in Email Templates. It must have an unsubscribe link.
  3. Set up your email provider and bounce and complaint handling, so bad addresses are suppressed.

Super Administrators and Administrators can create, launch, pause and cancel campaigns.

Create a campaign

Go to Email Management → Campaigns and click New Campaign.

SettingWhat it does
NameFor you; readers don't see it.
ProjectWhose subscribers receive the campaign, and whose branding and consent field are used.
EmailThe template to send. You can choose templates for all projects or for this project.

The email shows on the right as it will look, with the project's branding.

Audience

OptionWho receives it
All subscribersEveryone in the project who said yes to marketing emails.
A segmentEveryone in the segment who said yes to marketing emails.

Only people with an email address whose consent field is yes are included. The editor shows how many people match now.

When

OptionWhen it sends
NowAs soon as you launch it.
OnceOn a date and time.
DailyEvery day at a time.
WeeklyOn the weekdays you pick, at a time.
MonthlyOn a day of the month, e.g. day 1 or the last day, or on a weekday such as the first Monday or the last Friday, at a time.

Every option except Now has a timezone, set to yours by default. For a monthly day after the 28th, the campaign sends on the last day of shorter months.

A recurring campaign can Keep sending, send Until a date, or Stop after a number of sends. The next send times show below, in your local time.

Options

Skip a send when a content list in the email has no items is on by default. A newsletter built from a content list is then not sent on days without new articles.

Launch

Click Save draft to come back later. When you're ready, click Review and send, or Review and schedule for a later or recurring campaign. Check the summary, such as the number of people and the send time, and confirm.

Only draft campaigns can be edited or deleted. To change a campaign after launch, cancel it and create a new one.

What happens at each send

  • The audience is counted again before every send, so a recurring campaign reaches new subscribers and leaves out people who left the segment.
  • Profile data and content lists are read at send time, so every email has the latest values and articles.
  • Readers who unsubscribe while a send is in progress are skipped.
  • Addresses on the suppressed list are skipped.

A send is Skipped when the previous send of the campaign is still in progress, or when a content list in the email has no items and the option above is on. The reason shows next to the send.

Follow a campaign

Click a campaign to see its email, audience, schedule and next send. While it sends, the page updates by itself.

The Sends list has a row for every send:

ColumnWhat it shows
TimeWhen the send was due, in your local time.
StatusPreparing while the audience is counted, then Sending, Sent, Paused, Skipped, Failed or Cancelled.
ProgressEmails sent out of the number of recipients, with suppressed and failed emails.
RatesThe share of delivered emails that were opened and clicked.
DurationHow long the send took, and when it finished.

The campaign itself is Draft, Active, Paused, Ended or Cancelled. A one-off campaign ends after its send, a recurring one after its last.

Results

Once emails are delivered, the totals across all sends show above the list:

ResultWhat it counts
DeliveredEmails your provider accepted.
OpenedRecipients who opened the email, with the rate against delivered.
ClickedRecipients who clicked a link, with the rate against delivered.
BouncedEmails that bounced.
ComplaintsRecipients who marked the email as spam.

Results are updated regularly, not in real time. Opens and clicks need open and click tracking. See all your email in Analytics.

Pause, resume and cancel

ActionWhat happens
PauseSending stops within moments. Nothing more is sent until you resume.
ResumeSending continues where it stopped. A recurring schedule continues from now; sends missed while paused are not made up.
CancelSending stops and no further sends are made. This can't be undone.

Automatic pause

UniSignIn pauses a campaign by itself when too many of its emails bounce or are marked as spam, to protect your sender reputation. The send shows Paused with the reason, e.g. Paused automatically and the bounce rate.

Check the audience and your deliverability first. If you're sure, click Resume: the send continues and is not paused automatically again.

Good practice

  • Test first. Send the template to yourself with Send test, then launch the campaign to a small segment of your team before the real audience.
  • Warm up a new domain or provider. Start with your most engaged readers and smaller sends, then grow over a few weeks. A sudden large send from a new domain is often filtered as spam.
  • Keep lists clean. Set up bounce and complaint handling before your first campaign.
  • Check the sender domain. Fix any Missing record on the Deliverability tab.
  • Use fallbacks. Add a default to personal values, e.g. {{profile.first_name | default:"there"}}, and check the Checks tab of the template.
