Send a Welcome Email Series

Overview

New readers decide early whether they'll come back. This journey welcomes every reader who signs up, follows up two days later with readers who didn't open the welcome email, and tags those who did so you can target them later.

Signs up → Send Email: Welcome → Wait 2 days → Opened the welcome email?
├─ Yes → Add Tag: engaged
└─ No → Send Email: Reminder

Before you start

  • Create two email templates: Welcome and Welcome reminder. The subject and preview text come from the template.
  • Set the marketing consent field for your project in Email Settings. Only readers who agreed to marketing email receive journey emails; the others pass through without an email.

Build the journey

  1. Go to Audience Operation → Journey → New Journey. Name it Welcome series, pick your project and choose In the background.
  2. Click the first step. Under Start, choose When an event happens, set Start when a user to Signs up, and keep Entry on Once per user.
  3. Click + under it and add Send Email with the Welcome template.
  4. Add a Wait of 2 days.
  5. Add a Yes/No Split. It already checks Whether they opened an email, with the welcome email chosen.
  6. On the Yes path, add Add Tag with the tag engaged.
  7. On the No path, add Send Email with the Welcome reminder template.
  8. When the checklist on the right is clear, click Publish.

Measure

Open the journey to see the numbers on each step: how many entered, how many opened the welcome email, how the split went and how many opened the reminder. Readers tagged engaged can be used in a Segment, for example to offer them your newsletter.

Ideas

  • Add a Wait of 5 more days and a third email with your most read articles.
  • Change the split to Whether they clicked a link in an email to follow up only with readers who never visited.
  • Use Update Profile to record that the series finished, and use the field in segments.

See Journeys for every step and split.
